Breastfeeding is a process and a relationship between two people: you and your baby. Both basic breastfeeding support and dealing with any challenges involves both baby and mother, and we are able to assist, diagnose, and treat both at the same time.
Both mother and baby will be seen by our breastfeeding specialists. We will first spend some time with both you and your baby. We will get a comprehensive medical, pregnancy and lactation history for both of you. We will listen to you to understand your concerns, challenges, fears, questions, goals, and your unique situation.
Usually, a board-certified lactation consultant will see you first, and then the doctor will also see you and your baby. During your visit, we will examine you and your baby and observe the baby while breastfeeding. Together, we will all develop a personalized breastfeeding and follow-up plan in order to meet your goals, address any issues, and help you feel more confident, secure, comfortable and joyful in breastfeeding with a happy, healthy baby. If you have been referred by a physician, we will send a report to your baby’s pediatrician and/or your OB/GYN.
The whole process typically takes between 1-2 hours. Visits are almost covered by almost all insurance plans.
What to bring with you to your visit
- Wear comfortable clothes for nursing and also for your exam. We have gowns available in our office as well.
- Try to come at a time when your baby will be ready to eat during your visit.
- A record of the past 24-48 hours of feedings, supplements, wet and dirty diapers.
- Your baby’s recent weights and growth information. This is essential information. You may need to get this from your baby’s doctor if you don’t have it written down or recorded in an app.
- Bring any supplies, devices, or tools you are using while nursing, such as nipple shields, breast shields, or supplemental nursing systems.
- If you have questions about pumping, bring any of the flanges and attachments you are using.
- If your insurance (for you or the baby) requires a referral or if you are being referred by a doctor, please bring or fax a referral form from the doctor’s office.
